The central portion has a radiating appearance which is surrounded by lamellated areas in this example. The number of corpora amylacea increases with age. They are more commonly seen in benign glands than in cancer. Sometimes they calcify forming calculi which can be felt as gritty sand-like structures in radical prostatectomy specimens.
