Image Description
Renal hemangioma: This is an example of anastomosing hemangioma of the kidney. There is some resemblance to splenic parenchyma as well as angiosarcoma. The endothelial cells lining the vascular spaces in hemangiomas are CD34+ve and CD8-ve. The splenic pulp sinusoidal cells are CD34-ve and CD8+ve. Angiosarcomas show infiltrative architecture, necrosis, and significant cytologic atypia in the endothelial lining. These features are absent in hemangiomas. Some cases of anastomosing hemangioma of the kidney show extramedullary hematopoiesis (seen here as scattered clusters of erythroid precursors with dark nuclei; see higher magnification in the next image).
