Gross Pathology: Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a small, variably myxoid, gray-tan, fibrofatty lesion with ill-defined margins, centered in deep dermis or subcutaneous fat. The size is usually 3 to 5 cm but some cases reach 10-15 cm in diameter.
The gross appearance depends upon the relative amounts of the three tissue components. The cut surface in a typical case shows grayish-white fibrous bands admixed with yellow adipose tissue. Cases with a predominant fibroblastic component resemble fibromatosis. When the fatty component is prominent, it can resemble a fibrolipoma.
