Immunohistochemically, intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor shows concomitant expression of epithelial, mesenchymal, and neural markers. The image shows strong immunoreactivity for neuron specific enolase. Ultrastructurally, this corresponds to the presence of membrane-bound, dense-core cytoplasmic granules. Other markers of neuroendocrine differentiation such as chromogranin and synaptophysin are expressed uncommonly.
