Struma Ovarii : Pathologic Changes
Image Description
Pathologic Changes: The whole range of pathologic changes seen in eutopic thyroid can also occur in struma ovarii - including diffuse or nodular hyperplasia leading to hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, carcinomas (up to 10% of cases), and malignant lymphomas. Thyroid carcinomas range from well-differentiated papillary to follicular to anaplastic high-grade carcinomas. The histologic criteria for malignancy are the same as those used in eutopic thyroid.
This image shows a focus of nodular hyperplasia within thyroid tissue of struma ovarii. Grossly, the specimen closely resembled a multinodular goiter.
