Image Description

Introduction: Yolk sac tumor (YST) makes up about 20% of all primitive, malignant germ cell tumors of the ovary. Pure YST occurs in children, adolescents and young adults and is of germ cell origin.

In adults, YST is of somatic origin and is seen in peri- and postmenopausal women as a result of dedifferentiation within a somatic epithelial malignancy such as endometrioid carcinoma, serous carcinoma, or carcinosarcoma.

Morphologically, both pediatric and adult tumors display a similar variety of architectural patterns. This image shows microcystic/reticular pattern from a pediatric case.
