When cystitis is caused by urea-splitting gram negative bacteria, it leads to alkalinization of the urine and deposition of calcium salts on the injured urothelial mucosa - a condition referred to as encrusted cystitis. Calcium deposits are scattered throughout the lamina propria in this image.
