Image Description

Definition: Bladder diverticulum is defined as a large herniation of urothelium through the muscularis propria of the bladder wall. This creates a thin-walled, cyst-like structure filled with urine adjacent to the bladder. The diverticulum is connected with the bladder lumen through a narrow neck or ostium. Bladder diverticula occur in all age groups but 90% occur in adults and are far more common in males (M:F = 9:1). They may be congenital or acquired.

This autopsy photograph shows a cystectomy specimen with an incidentally discovered diverticulum. Note the prominent trabeculation of the bladder wall. Patient had benign prostatic hyperplasia.
