Higher magnification of the previous image shows typical morphology consisting of finely dispersed nuclear chromatin, inconspicuous or punctate nucleoli, and nuclear molding. Approximately 50% of cases of small cell carcinoma of the prostate are admixed with areas of conventional acinar adenocarcinoma. In mixed tumors, the Gleason grade is applied only to the non-small cell component.
