Image Description

Parietal cells are conspicuous in the isthmus and neck of the gastric pits (seen here as cells in the middle portion of the image with abundant pink cytoplasm). They secrete gastric acid and intrinsic factor. Deeper, in the gland base, peptic (chief) cells secrete pepsinogen, neuroendocrine cells secrete hormones, and stem cells support regenerative function.
