Image Description

Autoimmune gastritis is a chronic condition that persists over time. If untreated, the inflammatory process will eventually damage all or nearly all of the parietal cells. In such situations, the fundic mucosa may resemble the antral mucosa, necessitating correlation with endoscopic findings to confirm the site of origin of the biopsy tissue. This image shows thinning of the fundic mucosa due to loss of parietal cells and dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate.
