The FLC (left) is separated from the native liver parenchyma (right) by a thin fibrous capsule. The large, eosinophilic, polygonal tumor cells have distinctive granular cytoplasm and large nuclei with prominent nucleoli and focal cytologic atypia. FLC tumor cells often contain hyaline eosinophilic d-PAS+ globules (C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, alpha-1 antitrypsin) and "pale bodies" (fibrinogen, albumin). As in conventional HCC, there may be bile production, with canalicular pCEA staining.
