In mucinous variant of colorectal adenocarcinomas, the presence of mucin in the stroma incites a strong desmoplastic and inflammatory response. Some areas of the tumor may be completely devoid of neoplastic epithelium and consist only of pools of dissecting mucin containing inflammatory infiltrate (as shown here).
