Image Description

The glandular component in mucinous variant of colorectal adenocarcinoma is usually well-differentiated and consists of irregular, branching or anastomosing glands lined by tall columnar epithelium surrounded by pools of mucin. Cytologic atypia is minimal and mitotic activity is not high.

Mucin production in colorectal adenocarcinomas: The conventional colorectal adenocarcinoma produces MUC1 and MUC3 mucins. The mucinous variant produces MUC2 mucin. The poorly-differentiated colorectal carcinomas produce MUC13. Serrated adenocarcinoma is associated with increased expression of MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6.
