Image Description

The clinical course of collagenous colitis may be protracted with relapses and remissions; however, it is not as severe as in ulcerative colitis or Crohn disease. Some patients go into spontaneous remission. Others require therapy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-diarrheal agents. Patients who are refractory to all therapies may require a diverting ileostomy.

This image shows trichrome stain highlighting the subepithelial collagen band in a case of collagenous colitis. It was related to intake of a proton-pump inhibitor - lansoprazole - for gastroesophageal reflux disease (same case as the previous image). Image courtesy of: @patholwalker
