Warts (verrucae) are squamoproliferative lesions of skin or mucous membrane caused by infection with human papillomaviruses (HPV). HPV is a small (55 nm diameter), non-enveloped virus with icosahedral symmetry and double stranded DNA of 8000 base pairs. It belongs to the papovavirus family.

This image of common warts shows numerous elevated, flesh colored, firm lesions with rough surface on the dorsum of hand (the most frequently affected site) in a 50 y/o male.
