Histoplasmosis : Tongue

Disseminated Histoplasmosis: Oral involvement is usually seen in disseminated histoplasmosis. Tongue, palate, and buccal mucosa are the most commonly affected sites. The patients present with solitary, painful ulcer of several weeks' duration. The ulcers have firm margins and may clinically resemble malignancy.

The image shows ulceration of squamous mucosa of the tongue and a dense infiltrate of epithelioid histiocytes (with light pink cytoplasm) in the lamina propria. The histiocytes are admixed with lymphocytes and plasma cells. This HIV+ve patient presented with disseminated disease.
