Dysplasia vs Cancerization of Mucosa: In cases with invasive carcinoma, there may be secondary involvement of the surface epithelium by cancer cells - referred to as cancerization or colonization of the mucosa which may be difficult to distinguish from dysplasia. Features that favor cancerization over dysplasia include: 1) morphologic resemblance and direct continuity with the underlying invasive carcinoma; and 2) abrupt change from normal to dysplastic cells (shown here).
