Infectious Mononucleosis - Tonsils: This field shows diffuse proliferation of immunoblasts and resembles large cell lymphoma. However, in contrast to a large cell lymphoma, infectious mononucleosis will also contain intermediate-sized lymphocytes and plasma cells. Immunoblasts are both B and T type (B>T) and express CD30 but not CD15. EBV-encoded RNA (EBER) in-situ hybridization will show numerous EBV-infected cells in the paracortex but not in the germinal centers.
