Cholesterolosis : Epidemiology

Epidemiology: The epidemiology and risk factors of cholesterolosis are similar to that of cholesterol gallstones and the two may coexist in up to 50% of surgically resected gallbladders, although they occur independently of each other. Cholesterolosis is common in adults and especially in multiparous women. Its prevalence in autopsy and cholecystectomy specimens is reported to be around 12% and 9%-26% respectively.

The image shows liver and opened gallbladder from an autopsy. Note the yellow flecks scattered diffusely throughout the gallbladder mucosa. There were no gallstones in this case.
