Comments:
Extensive liver necrosis in adenovirus hepatitis. The necrotic areas show karyorrhectic debris and mixed inflammatory infiltrate. At the edge of necrotic areas, one sees the characteristic smudge cells which are hepatocytes with large basophilic intranuclear inclusions. Ultrastructurally, these inclusions are composed of paracrystalline arrays of 70-90 nm adenovirus particles.
