Back to Spleen | Return to Lymph Nodes Spleen
1: Hamartoma of Spleen
Comments: A tumor-like mass of disorganized but mature tissue indigenous to the particular site is called a hamartoma. Splenic hamartoma is composed exclusively of red pulp elements. It lacks follicles or fibrous trabeculae. In the specimen photograph, note the normal spleen to the right. Image courtesy of: Ed Uthman, MD, Houston, Texas. Used with permission.
2: Inflammatory Pseudotumor - Spleen
Comments: This inflammatory pseudotumor was an incidental finding in a 38 y/o male. The splenectomy specimen showed multiple well-circumscribed firm nodules. This image shows the interface between the lesion and normal spleen (upper left).
3: Inflammatory Pseudotumor - Spleen
Comments: The lesion is composed of a lymphocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils, and histiocytes in a background of proliferation of myofibroblastic cells. Necrosis may sometimes be present.
4: Inflammatory Pseudotumor - Spleen
Comments: Some areas of the lesion in this case were more sclerotic than others. The etiology of inflammatory pseudotumor of spleen is unknown. The clinical course following splenectomy is benign.
