Image Description

Schwannomas usually consist of a well-circumscribed encapsulated nodule. The fibrous capsule is derived from epineurium and includes the residual nerve fibers. Rare schwannomas arising in the dermis may be unencapsulated. Plexiform schwannomas are multinodular tumors, like plexiform neurofibromas.

This image of a schwannoma nicely illustrates the fibrous capsule underneath which is a proliferation of spindled Schwann cells (mostly Antoni A areas).
