Image Description

Neurofibromas usually contain varying amounts of cellular elements (neoplastic Schwann cells, axons, EMA+ve perineurial-like cells, fibroblasts, CD34+ spindle cells, and mast cells), mucinous stroma, and collagen.

Departure from usual histology may occur and these variant features include: increased cellularity, dense collagen bundles and little or no mucoid stroma (as seen here), storiform pattern, highly myxoid stroma (myxoid neurofibroma; creating confusion with myxoma or myxoid liposarcoma), epithelioid appearance to Schwann cells (epithelioid neurofibroma), and the presence of glandular elements or rosettes.
