Introduction: Myolipoma is an uncommon variant of lipoma composed of mature adipose tissue and well-differentiated smooth muscle cells. It is also referred to as extrauterine lipoleiomyoma.
About the Disease
Myolipoma of soft tissue is a rare subtype of lipoma composed of mature adipose tissue and well-differentiated smooth muscle cells lacking atypia. It usually occurs in adult females as a large mass in deep-seated locations (retroperitoneum, abdomen, pelvis, and inguinal region). Some cases show alterations in HMGA2 gene - a transcription factor at 12q14-15 locus. Myolipomas show immunoreactivity for HMGA2 (60% cases; nuclear), SMA, desmin, caldesmon and estrogen receptor. Despite its large size and deep location, it pursues a benign course. There are no reports of recurrences or metastases.
