Superficial Lipomas: They are the most common subtype. They are found in the subcutaneous tissues of upper back, neck, shoulder, abdomen, buttocks, upper thigh and upper arm. They are rarely seen in the face and distal extremities (hands, lower leg, feet).
Deep Lipomas: They are less common, often poorly circumscribed and tend to be larger since they are often discovered late. They arise from tissues deep to the subcutis (e.g. intramuscular lipoma, intermuscular lipoma, lipoma of tendon sheath, neural fibrolipoma, juxtaarticular region, parosteal lipoma, and lumbosacral lipoma) or from specific anatomic sites (forehead, scalp, thorax, mediastinum, chest wall, pelvis, paratesticular region, and abdominal viscera).
