Chondroid lipoma
Reviewers: Dharam M. Ramnani, MD
Chondroid lipoma is an uncommon variant of lipoma that is found mainly in the subcutaneous or deep soft tissues in the extremities and limb girdles of adult women. It is a benign tumor with no tendency to recur or metastasize. It consists of lipoblasts, chondroblasts and round, multivacuolated cells with eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm that resemble brown fat cells. Chondroid lipoma may be mistaken for myxoid liposarcoma or extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma. It contains a balanced translocation t(11;16)(q13;p12-13) resulting in the fusion of C11orf95 and MKL2 genes.
