Solid Adenocarcinoma

Solid adenocarcinoma of lung is a variant where the major tumor component consists of solid sheets and lacks other recognizable patterns of adenocarcinoma such as lepidic, acinar, papillary, or micropapillary growth. Intracellular mucin must be demonstrated with histochemical stains in 5% or more of tumor cells in at least two high-power fields. Solid tumors lacking mucin but expressing pneumocyte markers (TTF1 and/or Napsin A) are also included in this category.
Solid-predominant adenocarcinoma of lung is an aggressive tumor with poor prognosis. It is frequently associated with larger tumor size at presentation, lymph node metastasis as well as lymphovascular and pleural invasion.
Compared to other histologic subtypes, solid-predominant adenocarcinomas of the lung harbor lower frequency of EGFR mutations but higher prevalence of KRAS mutations and RET fusions. In addition, significantly higher proportion (more than one-third of cases) of solid-predominant adenocarcinomas are pan-negative for the seven common driver mutations seen in lung cancers (See Ref.)
