Image Description

Osteoarthrosis : Gross Features: The femoral head section shows deformity of normal anatomic structures with segmental loss of articular cartilage. This may cause flattening of convex joint surface, such as in femoral head, humeral head, and femoral condyles.

Loss of articular cartilage exposes subarticular bone which undergoes varying degrees of osteosclerosis. Full thickness loss of articular cartilage on both sides results in bone-on-bone contact. Repeated movements at this joint cause polishing of opposing surfaces (aka eburnation).

Outgrowths of new bone known as osteophytes form at the periphery of the joint or on articular surfaces. They are covered with varying amounts of hyaline or fibrocartilage.
