Chronic Tophaceous Gout : Gross Pathology
Image Description
A large gouty tophus in olecranon bursa. The cut surface shows yellow-white chalky deposits of monosodium urate surrounded by edematous periarticular soft tissues. Olecranon bursa is quite commonly involved in tophaceous gout because of the tendency of monosodium urate crystals to deposit in superficial tissues where the temperature tends to be lower.
