Higher power view of the previous image showing atypical chondrocytes in a Grade I chondrosarcoma. Plump hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli and occasional binucleated cells are seen. It should be remembered that the chondromas of small bones of hands and feet, periosteal chondromas, and chondromas of Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome can be quite cellular even show myxoid change. They may be mistaken for chondrosarcoma on histopathologic grounds alone. Radiographic and clinical information should always be taken into context. One distinguishing feature is that enchondromas grow by expansion whereas chondrosarcomas tend to permeate with entrapment of bony trabeculae.
