Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is a rare subtype of astrocytoma (WHO Grade II) that usually occurs in children and young adults. It has a predilection for temporal lobe and majority of the patients present with epilepsy. The tumor is usually well-circumscribed and frequently has solid and cystic components. Microscopically, they consist of spindle cells arranged in intersecting fascicles or storiform pattern admixed with pleomorphic astrocytes as shown in this low-power image.
