Image Description

Transmission of Molluscum Contagiosum: In children, the infection is acquired by direct person-to-person contact or via contaminated fomites. Scratching or touching the lesions can cause further spread by autoinoculation. When the disease is transmitted during close physical contact between wrestlers, it is referred to as molluscum gladiatorum.

In young adults with genital lesions, the disease is transmitted sexually. Other modes of transmission include: between medical providers and patient; use of shared equipment and public bathing facilities (including swimming pools); and tattooing. Atopic dermatitis is a risk factor due to breaks in the skin barrier. Patients with immunocompromised status are at increased risk of developing more extensive, generalized, and persistent lesions.
