Low-risk vs High-risk HPV: The alpha HPV types are mucosotropic and are subdivided into two groups. The low-risk group includes HPV6, 11, 42, 43, 44, 54, 61, 70, 72, and 81. They are considered non-carcinogenic as they are not associated with cancerous lesions and only very rarely associated with precancerous lesions. HPV types 6 and 11 are the most common cause of anogenital warts.
The high-risk group includes HPV16, 18, 31-33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68, 73, and 82. They are considered carcinogenic and are associated with squamous cell carcinoma of cervix (most commonly HPV types 16 and 18), anal cancer, Bowenoid papulosis, and a subset of head and neck cancers.
