Mastocytosis : Epidemiology
Image Description
Epidemiology: Mastocytosis can present at any age. Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) is more common in children. In most cases, the disease occurs during the first year of life, but it can be present at birth. CM is uncommon in adults. Most cases of skin involvement in adults are associated with systemic mastocytosis. Diffuse CM is seen almost always in young children and mastocytoma occurs exclusively in children as a solitary lesion.
Systemic mastocytosis usually manifests after 2nd decade of life and peaks during the fifth and sixth decades.
This image shows maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis (urticaria pigmentosa) in an infant. There are numerous brown macules and papules on the trunk and extremities.
