Immunohistochemical profile of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) of skin is similar to that seen in other locations and has been discussed previously.
Langerhans cells show strong surface and paranuclear staining for CD1a. A panel consisting of CD1a, Langerin (CD207) and S-100 protein (all positive in LCH) has largely replaced transmission electron microscopy (for Birbeck granules) to confirm the diagnosis of LCH.
