Image Description

Prognosis: The prognosis of pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is good. Most patients go into remission upon cessation of smoking. Some develop progressive disease that usually proves fatal. Median survival is 12 to 13 years. The 5-yr survival is 74%.

This low magnification image of a pulmonary LCH nodule shows obliteration of the lung parenchyma at its center. The infiltrate extends into the adjacent alveolar spaces at its periphery.
