Image Description

This photograph shows an underweight 4 y/o boy with multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) (same case as the previous image). He presented with multiple scalp abscesses, rash on face and scalp, and irregular protrusion of eyes (exophthalmos). Note the depression on the top of the head due to osteolytic skull lesions. The diagnosis of multisystem LCH was confirmed with skin and bone marrow biopsies.

Patients with multisystem disseminated LCH show an increased risk of malignancies, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, retinoblastoma, medulloblastoma, osteosarcoma, and basal cell carcinoma.
