Image Description

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) behaves like a low-grade soft tissue sarcoma. The primary mode of treatment is surgical resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Local recurrences occur in 40%-50% of cases and metastasis in 25% of patients (usually to lymph nodes, lungs, and liver).

About 20% of the patients die from their disease after a protracted clinical course. Adverse prognostic factors include large tumor size (>6 cm), intra-abdominal location, significant cytologic atypia, necrosis, and high proliferative index.

The image shows FDCS composed of epithelioid cells with moderate amount of fibrillar eosinophilic cytoplasm and indistinct borders. The nuclei show moderate pleomorphism with irregular shapes and vesicular chromatin. A couple of mitotic figures are present. The tumor cells are admixed with a few small lymphocytes.
