Image Description

Pulmonary MALT Lymphoma - Prognosis: Pulmonary MALT lymphomas are low-grade B-cell tumors that usually have good clinical outcomes. By the time of diagnosis, almost 40-50% of cases have spread to mediastinal lymph nodes and one-third show extranodal disease, especially to sites known to give rise to MALT lymphomas. Relapses can occur in the lung or other MALT sites, especially stomach and salivary glands. Some cases undergo transformation to DLBCL.

However, the overall prognosis is still good irrespective of the treatment modality chosen. Prolonged remissions can be achieved with just surgical resection. The 5-yr and 10-yr survival rates range from 68-90% and 53-72% respectively.

This low magnification image of pulmonary MALT lymphoma shows lymphocytic infiltrate surrounding bronchial wall and major vessels.
