Image Description

MALT Lymphoma - Morphology: One of the characteristic features of MALT lymphomas is the formation of lymphoepithelial lesions. They are defined as aggregates of 3 or more neoplastic marginal zone lymphocytes invading and distorting the nearby glandular epithelium, frequently accompanied by eosinophilic (oxyphilic) change in the cytoplasm (best seen in thyroid MALT lymphomas). Lymphoepithelial lesions are not pathognomonic of MALT lymphomas and may be absent in MALT lymphomas of small and large intestines.

This image of lymphoepithelial lesion is from a salivary gland MALT lymphoma in a patient with Sjogren syndrome. There is atrophy of columnar ductal epithelium, proliferation of basal epithelial cells and infiltration by neoplastic marginal zone B-cells, resulting in formation of a lymphoepithelial lesion.
