Campylobacter and Immunoproliferative Small Intestinal Disease (IPSID): Also known as alpha heavy chain disease, IPSID is a type of MALT lymphoma in which there is expression of abnormally truncated monotypic immunoglobulin alpha heavy chains without associated light chains. Initial studies have suggested that Campylobacter species (C. jejuni and C. coli) play the same role in the pathogenesis of IPSID as H. pylori does in gastric MALT lymphomas.
IPSID is a rare disorder that often regresses following antibiotic therapy for Campylobacter. It is largely seen in the Middle East, parts of Indian subcontinent and South Africa.
Campylobacter jejuni is a helical-shaped, non-spore forming, gram-negative bacterium with a single polar flagellum. It is usually carried by birds and is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis worldwide.
