Image Description

Pleomorphic adenomas (PA) range in size from a few centimeters to large, bulky masses. They are well circumscribed and usually encapsulated lesions. The capsule may sometimes be deficient or even absent.

Small inconspicuous satellite nodules may project outside the main tumor into the adjacent salivary parenchyma. For this reason, enucleation is not a preferred method of treatment. It is complicated by a high recurrence rate. Multi-nodularity can be seen in recurrent tumors. This image shows a 5.5 cm, well-defined solid tumor with a glistening, translucent bluish-white cut surface due to cartilaginous stroma of the tumor.
