Ameloblastomas display a wide variety of architectural patterns under the microscope, including follicular, plexiform, acanthomatous, basaloid, granular cell, and desmoplastic. Multiple patterns often coexist and they have no clinical significance.
Basaloid: The basaloid type consists of islands of uniform basaloid cells. There is no central stellate reticulum in the islands. The hypercellularity, nuclear crowding, and nuclear hyperchromasia in such cases can be mistaken for basal cell carcinoma.
