Immunohistochemistry of Hidradenoma Papilliferum: The glandular epithelial cells express low molecular weight cytokeratin, EMA, CEA, HMFG, and GCDFP-15. Estrogen and progesterone receptors are positive. The myoepithelial cells express S100 protein, p63, and SMA.

The tumor is believed to be of sweat gland origin; however, due to its remarkable similarity to intraductal papilloma of the breast, some have suggested it arises from anorectal mammary-type glands (ectopic breast tissue).
