Image Description

Leiomyomas are composed of uniform smooth muscle cells arranged in whorled anastomosing fascicles. Cytologically, smooth muscle cells are spindly, with indistinct cytoplasmic borders and a fibrillar eosinophilic cytoplasm. Nuclei are ovoid to elongate with blunt ends. The chromatin is open and occasionally an inconspicuous nucleolus is seen. Rare mitosis or none is characteristic of typical leiomyomas.
