Image Description

Introduction: Steroid cell tumor, not otherwise specified (NOS), of the ovary is composed of uniform polygonal cells with an appearance suggestive of steroid hormone synthesis. It has abundant eosinophilic or microvacuolated lipid-rich cytoplasm. It has previously also been referred to as lipid cell tumor or lipoid cell tumor - terms which should no longer be used. It is morphologically similar to Leydig cell tumor but lacks Reinke crystals.

Another related entity known as stromal luteoma, referring to a steroid cell tumor < 2cm in size in a background of stromal hyperthecosis, is now included in the category of Steroid cell tumor, NOS.
