Image Description

This is a variant of chronic oophoritis seen in young women with history of pelvic inflammatory disease. It may be the end result of excessive necrosis in a case of oophoritis resulting in abundant lipid breakdown products which are phagocytized by histiocytes. The image shows numerous lipid-laden foamy histiocytes, plasma cells, and lymphocytes. Grossly, it may form solid, yellowish, well-circumscribed multinodular masses.
