Immature Teratoma : Microscopic
Image Description
This image of an immature teratoma shows oligodendroglial cells surrounded by a sheet of primitive small round blue cells.
Serum AFP elevation should prompt a thorough search for yolk sac elements. If yolk sac tumor is present, the tumor is classified as a mixed germ cell tumor. NOTE: Immunohistochemical stains should be interpreted with caution as: SALL4 may be positive in immature neuroectoderm and intestinal glands, SOX2 and glypican-3 may be expressed by neuroectodermal elements, and AFP may be positive in immature intestinal-type glands.
