Mature Cystic Teratoma : Treatment & Prognosis
Image Description
TREATMENT & PROGNOSIS: Mature cystic teratomas of the ovary are benign tumors with excellent prognosis and can be excised conservatively. Since 10% can be bilateral, the contralateral ovary is carefully examined and biopsied if necessary.
In the presence of complications such as anti-NMDA encephalitis, torsion or infection, the tumor is removed completely. Rare cases of somatic malignancy arising within teratomas have been reported. Some patients develop gliomatosis peritonei which has no impact on the prognosis, as long as it does not contain immature neural tissues.
About this image: This mature cystic teratoma shows mesodermal derivatives such as smooth muscle and cartilage and endodermal derivative such as gastrointestinal epithelium.
